The Story Behind “Onyok Kokok”
One of the questions I get asked the most is, “What does Onyok Kokok mean?”
“Onyok” is my son’s nickname. My wife got the nickname from a popular primetime television show while she was pregnant with him, and it eventually became the name everyone called him.
Since my son has always loved eating chicken, we started playing around with words that rhymed with Onyok, and “Kokok” naturally came to mind because it sounds like the familiar “kokok” of a chicken.
Years ago, when I decided to create my YouTube channel, I wanted a unique name that was somehow connected to cooking. I first thought of Onyok Cook, but I wasn’t convinced. More importantly, I couldn’t think of a catchy way to address my viewers. Calling everyone “Ka-Cook” just didn’t sound natural or memorable.
That’s when Onyok Kokok was born.
Over the years, Ka-Kokok became the nickname I affectionately use for everyone who watches my videos and visits this website. Today, it’s more than just a name; it’s a community of people who share the same love for cooking and homemade food.
How My Cooking Journey Began
Cooking has always been one of my greatest passions. My wife and I both enjoy cooking, and one of my favorite things to do is experiment with new recipes. I love discovering different cooking techniques, recreating favorite dishes, and improving recipes until they’re simple, reliable, and delicious enough to share with others.
My love for cooking began when I was still in elementary school. During school holidays and summer vacations, I would cook and sell homemade food to earn extra money while always making sure that my studies remained my top priority during the school year.
In the beginning, my mother helped me prepare the food and patiently taught me the basics of cooking. As I gained more experience, I eventually learned to prepare and cook everything on my own.
Whenever possible, I prepared ingredients the night before so I could start early the next morning. Before sunrise, while it was still dark, I would walk several kilometers to the market to buy fresh ingredients because I wanted to save the money I would have spent on a tricycle ride. Every peso I saved became additional capital for the food I was selling.
Over the years, I sold many different foods, including pichi-pichi, palitaw, kwek-kwek, fish balls, kikiam, samalamig, fresh mangoes with bagoong, singkamas with bagoong, and many others. During All Saints’ Day, I also prepared and sold food near the cemetery because I saw it as another opportunity to earn through cooking.
Looking back, I realized that whenever I saw an opportunity, cooking was always at the center of it. Those experiences taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, creativity, and making the most of every opportunity – lessons that continue to guide me today.
