Beef with Garlic and Mushroom Recipe (Filipino Style)
This Beef with Garlic and Mushroom recipe features tender beef simmered until soft, then coated in a rich buttery mushroom gravy and topped with crispy fried garlic. It's a simple yet satisfying Filipino-style comfort food that pairs perfectly with steamed rice.
Main Dish
- 1 kg beef preferably with some fat, thinly sliced
- 1 large red onion chopped
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2-3 tbsp cooking oil
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- ½ tsp ground black pepper or to taste
- 2-3 cups water adjust as needed
- ½ tbsp sugar brown or white optional
Gravy
- 50 g butter ¼ of a 200g block
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup mushrooms or 1 can sliced button mushrooms
- ½ cup water added gradually
- 1-2 tbsp soy sauce adjust to taste
- ½ tsp ground black pepper adjust to taste
Step 1: Prepare the Fried Garlic
Finely chop or mince the garlic.
Heat oil over low heat.
Fry the garlic until lightly golden.
Remove immediately and drain on paper towels.
Set aside for topping later.
Step 2: Cook the Beef
Heat cooking oil in a large pan or pot.
Sauté the onions until softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
Add the beef and cook until lightly browned.
Pour in the soy sauce and oyster sauce.
Add black pepper and optional sugar.
Stir well to coat the beef.
Step 3: Tenderize the Beef
Pour in 2–3 cups of water.
Bring to a boil.
Lower the heat and simmer until the beef becomes tender.
Add more water if necessary during cooking.
Once tender, set aside.
Step 4: Make the Mushroom Gravy
In a separate pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the flour and stir continuously for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
Add the mushrooms and sauté briefly.
Slowly add water while stirring continuously.
Add soy sauce and black pepper.
Continue stirring until the gravy reaches your desired consistency.
Step 5: Assemble the Dish
Transfer the cooked beef to a serving platter or serving dish.
Spoon the mushroom gravy evenly over the top of the beef.
Generously sprinkle with crispy fried garlic.
Serve immediately while hot with steamed rice.
